Dr. Guzmán Vélez and Dr. Héctor De Jesús Cortés were the fou nders and directors of the Sagrado Neuroscience Precollege Program, a summer internship and mentoring program designed for high school students in grades 9, 10, and 11 in Puerto Rico who are interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering and/or math (STEM) with a focus in neuroscience. The program provided its young scholars with interactive seminars and hands-on activities to learn about STEM careers, research methods, career development, effective communication skills, and college applications, among others. We had 4 very successful years, with students winning science fairs and being admitted to prestigious universities such as MIT, Yale University, Notre Dame University, Cornell University, Georgia Tech, University of Puerto Rico, Harvard University, Princeton University, Columbia University, Johns Hopkins, and others!
This program was in collaboration and with the support of the Universidad de Sagrado Corazón in Puerto Rico and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. The program ended in 2023.
